The 3rd All-University FD Training Session for the 2025 academic year: "Concepts and Design Required for General Education in Undergraduate Programs – Focusing on the Kanazawa University General Education Reform"

On October 21, the 3rd All-University FD Training Session for the 2025 academic year, titled "Concepts and Design Required for General Education in Undergraduate Programs – Focusing on the Kanazawa University General Education Reform," was held online, with 130 participants from both within and outside the university.

Kanazawa University is currently reforming common education for the 2026 academic year. The bachelor’s program's <Global> Standard will be reorganized from the previous six groups into four, and there will be significant changes in the placement of general education courses (GS courses). In addition, new courses related to multicultural learning will be introduced, aiming to revamp general education to meet the needs of the new era. During this training session, participants had the opportunity to reflect on the future direction of general education in universities, while learning from a keynote lecture on the new general education system introduced at Okayama University starting in the 2025 academic year.

After the opening remarks by Akiharu Morimoto, Trustee (General Affairs, University Reform, Education, and Information), and Vice President of Kanazawa University, Assosiate Professor Takashi Waga from the Educational Planning Office at Okayama University gave a keynote lecture titled "The Concept and Design of Okayama University’s Target 2025 (Education Reform) – What Kind of Learning is Needed for the Future of General Education?" Following that, reports on Kanazawa University's general education reform were presented by Professor Yasutaka Kakiuchi, Dean of the International Education Institute, under the title "General Education Reform at Kanazawa University," and by Professor Tohru Taniuchi (Advisor to the President for Planning and Evaluation, Education Reform, Student Recruitment, and High School-University Graduate School Connections), who presented on "Designing Multicultural Collaborative Courses at Kanazawa University." ??

During the second half of the session, a discussion was facilitated by Professor Toru Hayashi, Deputy Director of the Center for Management of Teaching and Learning . The discussion focused on various topics, including the new "Knowledge Exploration" course introduced at Okayama University, the management methods for this course, the approach to multicultural collaborative courses at Kanazawa University, the examination of late specialization, and key points for advancing general education reform while promoting mutual understanding among university members. There were many questions, which reflected the high level of interest in the topic.

Finally, the session concluded with closing remarks by Director of the Center for Management of Teaching and Learning, Director General of University-wide Education and International Collaborative Learning Organization (responsible for Education Reform, Planning and Evaluation, and Diversity Promotion), Kyoko Ojima, bringing the event to a successful close.
